Description:

In the past 24 hours, reports of six people suffering from toxic shellfish poisoning have been received by the Medical Officer of Health. Each person affected had eaten shellfish collected from the coastline which has a current health warning. Dr Jim Miller, Medical Officer of Health, would like to remind the public that this health warning due to shellfish toxins along part of Bay of Plenty coastline is still in place. “I’ve had reports that people have been continuing to eat shellfish and have felt unwell after doing so. The toxins can make people very ill and I strongly advise not collecting or consuming shellfish from any part of the affected area,” says Dr Miller. “These are the first cases we have had reported since the Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) outbreak in the Bay of Plenty in late 2012. The PSP toxin levels in shellfish from this area are rising and I urge people to heed the warning and make sure that their visitors and friends are aware,” says Dr Miller. A health warning was issued on 28th November 2014 advising against the collection of shellfish from Mount Maunganui and along the Bay of Plenty coast to Whakatane Heads in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The warning includes all islands and estuaries along this part of the coastline. The health warning applies to all bi-valve shellfish including mussels, pipi, tuatua, cockles, oysters, scallops as well as cat’s eyes, snails and kina (sea urchin). Shellfish in the affected area should not be taken or eaten. Shellfish containing the toxin don’t look or taste any different from shellfish that are safe to eat. Cooking or freezing the shellfish does not remove the toxin. Paua, crayfish and crabs can still be taken but as always, the gut should be removed before consuming. Consumption of shellfish affected by the PSP toxin can cause numbness and tingling around the mouth, face, hands and feet; difficulty swallowing or breathing; dizziness; double vision; and in severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure. These symptoms can start as soon as 1-2 hours after eating toxic shellfish and usually within 12 hours. Anyone suffering illness after eating shellfish should seek urgent medical attention.

Anyway, it don’t really matter.  Anyway, we ended up buying a Roku player, back then as well.  It was a standard, then we upgraded to the Roku II, and recently the Roku II died, so we went ahead and upgraded to the Roku III.

Susan Montoya Bryan for Associated Press: Mishaps at Nuke Repository Lead to $54M in Fines

Mishaps at nuke repository lead to $54M in fines

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – New Mexico on Saturday levied more than $54 million in penalties against the U.S. Department of Energy for numerous violations that resulted in the indefinite closure of the nation’s only underground nuclear waste repository.

The state Environment Department delivered a pair of compliance orders to Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz, marking the state’s largest penalty ever imposed on the agency. Together, the orders outline more than 30 state permit violations at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in southeastern New Mexico and at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The orders and the civil penalties that come with them are just the beginning of possible financial sanctions the Energy Department could face in New Mexico. The state says it’s continuing to investigate and more fines are possible.

The focus has been on a canister of waste from Los Alamos that ruptured in one of WIPP’s storage rooms in February. More than 20 workers were contaminated and the facility was forced to close, putting in jeopardy efforts around the country to clean up tons of Cold War-era waste.

The state accuses Los Alamos of mixing incompatible waste, treating hazardous waste without a permit and failing to notify regulators about changes in the way waste was being handled. The penalties for the lab total $36.6 million.

“New Mexico does not need to choose between fulfilling the laboratory’s mission and protecting the environment,” Ryan Flynn, state environment secretary, said in a letter to Los Alamos officials. “DOE now has an opportunity to learn from these mistakes and implement meaningful corrective actions that will ensure the long-term viability of the Los Alamos National Laboratory.”

He wrote a similar letter to officials at WIPP, saying New Mexicans understand the nuclear repository’s importance but that it must be operated and maintained with “the highest standards of safety and complete transparency.” WIPP’s penalties total $17.7 million.

Moniz has said repeatedly that it’s a top priority for his agency to get WIPP on track, and he took steps earlier this year to shift oversight of the cleanup work at Los Alamos from the National Nuclear Security Administration to his agency’s Office of Environmental Management.

It wasn’t immediately clear Saturday whether DOE would seek a hearing on the penalties levied by New Mexico or pursue settlement negotiations. A message seeking comment was left with the agency.

Federal officials are expected to release a final accident investigation report before the end of the year. They have already said that cleanup and resuming full operations at WIPP could take years. The price tag has been estimated a half-billion dollars.

The state’s investigation has covered the radiological release as well as a fire nine days earlier that involved a truck carrying salt in an another area of the underground facility. The state says its findings confirmed the existence of major procedural problems that contributed to the events.

While investigators have yet to pinpoint exactly what caused the barrel to breach, they suspect a chemical reaction in highly acidic waste that was packed with organic cat litter to absorb moisture. According to the state, experts had notified the lab to stop using organic materials as early as 2012 because of the possible dangers of mixing them with nitrates salts.

Aviation Terror Threat – ALLOW IMAGES

Holiday Terror Threats Mounting,
Aircraft, Soldiers and Police Targeted
Dec 06, 2014

On Dec 1, 2014, AlertsUSA issued the following
related Flash messages to subscriber mobile devices:
12/1 – Aviation security incr in run up to xmas due to terror threat. Partic emphasis on EU carriers & airports. Expect delays. New carry-on restrictions forthcoming.

12/1 – FBI warning “current and former members of the military” to review social media accounts and exercise OPSEC online to avoid tracking by the Islamic militants.

What You Need To Know
Twice this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices regarding increasing terrorism threats here in the U.S. as well as Europe.

AVIATION THREAT

On Monday, subscribers were notified of an aviation security increase in run up to the Christmas holiday due to an evolving terror threat. Specifically, British media outlets are reporting, and AlertsUSA has confirmed, intelligence reports that the al Qaeda terror organization is plotting to blow up multiple European passenger jets before the end of the year and is thought to involve radical Muslims smuggling bombs onto planes bound for major EU destinations. So serious is the threat that aviation authorities are considering a ban on carry-on luggage.

While U.S. officials are oddly tight lipped on the European plot, readers will recall that it bears a striking similarity to a threat we reported on in September involving al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, the al Nusra Front, as well as the Khorasan group, to bomb commercial airliners using explosive materials which can evade detection and be smuggled onboard aircraft hidden in electronic devices. It was also this plot which was said to be the impetus for U.S. air and cruise missile strikes against al Qaeda positions in Syria. Those strikes were subsequently reported as having failed.

DOMESTIC THREAT TO ARMED SERVICES MEMBERS

Also on Monday, subscribers were notified of an intelligence bulletin issued by the FBI warning current and former members of the military to review their social media presence for any information that might serve to attract the attention of ISIL and its supporters and to, overall, exercise “operational security” online to avoid tracking by the Islamic militants.

This is just the latest in a recent series of warnings and orders to U.S. and Canadian military personnel regarding individual protective measures at home. In October, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned about the Islamic State’s calls for attacks on police, soldiers and government officials. Shortly thereafter, the Pentagon Force Protection Agency issued a security advisory to all members of the U.S. Armed Services warning of the threats, calling for an increased level of situational awareness, urging a low public profile and providing a list of individual protective measures.

And this was not just U.S.. Soldiers in Britain, the Netherlands, and Australia have also received similar guidance and directives.

DO NOT BECOME COMPLACENT

We strongly urge readers to not become complacent regarding the terrorism threat facing this country during the end of year holidays. This is a very dangerous time for the country and despite a seeming lull in domestic terror attacks, it is important to realize this is not for lack of trying. There exist dozens of counter terrorism operations constantly underway in the U.S. and Europe, the details of which are rarely paraded. Doing so serves no public, tactical or strategic benefit and actually makes it more difficult for the intelligence, investigative or protective services to operate.

If you feel the need for additional insight, we encourage you to strike up a friendly conversation with any federal agent or member of the special operations community. If specifically asked, they will, without hesitation, reveal that there are a near constant stream of active threats facing the homeland, from lone individuals all the way through to well organized, state sponsored operations, and that their tempo is increasing.

Take your vacations this holiday as planned and have a great time, but keep in mind that the U.S. is still at war, the current battle is with Muslim fanatics and this conflict will, for sure, be expanding. The simple reality is that U.S. citizens and interests both at home and abroad are targets. You would do well to carefully read the full text of U.S. government’s Worldwide Caution below to understand the scope of this threat.

WORLDWIDE CAUTION

On October 10, 2014, the U.S. State Department issued a new Worldwide Caution to American citizens warning of the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the world. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness.

CDC Deadlier Flu Season Possible – ALLOW IMAGES

CDC Warns Flu Vaccine a Poor Match,
Deadlier Flu Season Possible
Dec 6, 2014

On Dec 4, 2014, AlertsUSA issued the following
related Flash messages to subscriber mobile devices:
12/4 – CDC warning 2014/15 flu vaccine a poor match for the most common strain (H3N2) in circulation. Higher hospitalization rates and flu-related deaths expected.

What You Need To Know
On Thursday of this week AlertsUSA subscribers were notified via SMS messages to their mobile devices of a new CDC warning that this year's flu vaccine has ended up being a poor match for the primary influenza strain in circulation this season.

The CDC Health Alert Network advisory is reporting a predominance of Influenza A (H3N2) strain thus far for the 2014-2015 flu season. This strain of flu has historically been associated with an increased number of hospitalizations and deaths, particularly in the elderly, young children and those with chronic medical conditions. Unfortunately, approximately half of the H3N2 isolates identified from this year's flu cases have shown a modest “drift” away from the flu antigens in the current flu vaccine.

Readers are reminded that traditional flu vaccines, known as trivalent vaccines, are made to protect against three influenza strains; two influenza A strains and one influenza B strain. Given the amount of time necessary to develop and mass produce hundreds of millions of doses, and then distribute them nationwide to hospitals, clinics, and pharmacies, the selection of the specific strains takes place around February of each year. Well, this year a new, antigenically drifted H3N2 virus has begun to circulate more widely, something beyond the control of the CDC.

AlertsUSA cautions readers that despite the development of this mismatch and reduced effectiveness of the vaccine, the CDC indicates that some protection, or a reduction in the severity of illness, may still result. In addition, there are also two other influenza antigens provided for within the vaccine.

Further, the CDC is reminding clinicians of value of prescribing antiviral medications such as Tamiflu or Relenza for treatment of influenza, as well as for patients with conditions that raise their risk of seeing serious complications.

With this in mind, if your physician counsels you to not get vaccinated this season because of a reduction in the effectiveness against the primary strain, or refuses to prescribe antivirals if you do come down with the flu, you would do well to either force the issue or seek a second opinion.

AlertsUSA continues to monitor the spread of influenza in N. America and will immediately notify service subscribers of major changes in the severity of the outbreak, as well as provide regular updates, as events warrant.
