Six hundred and seventy ballots were cast in a Georgia precinct with 276 registered voters in the state’s primary election, according to the Georgia Secretary of State’s office.

A northeastern Georgia precinct located in Habersham County had 276 registered voters before the state’s primary elections at the end of May, but 670 votes were recorded—indicating that 276 percent of voters turned out in Georgia’s primary election, McClatchy reported.

The recently publicized voting irregularities come as the state investigated other instances of voter fraud—including one where an Atlanta City Hall staffer claimed she had to “print and deliver 500 blank absentee ballots” to an advocacy group staffer and pick up additional ballots from the Atlanta mayor’s campaign office to drop them off at an office in Fulton County.

The ransomware attack that cost Atlanta over $10M would have been stopped by a free Acronis solution

The Atlanta SamSam attack proves prevention is best

Acronis Ransomware Protection stops ransomware attacks like SamSam that the City of Atlanta has spent months and millions recovering from

You may have heard of the April 2018 “SamSam” ransomware attack on the city of Atlanta, Georgia, USA. While a terrible blow to Atlanta, it provides an instructive example of the real costs of recovering from a successful ransomware attack.

According to Atlanta’s chief of Information Management, more than a third of the city’s 424 essential applications were laid low by the attack, with 30 percent of those supporting vital municipal functions like the court system and police department. According to reports, the City Attorney’s office lost all but six of its 77 computers and 10 years’ worth of documents, while the police department lost all of its stored dash cam recordings: serious losses of critical data.
The True Cost of Ransomware

It is estimated that Atlanta will need to spend $9.5 million over the next year to recover, in addition to $2 million in recovery cost outlays from the first few weeks after the attack. The total could easily balloon further as the city completes its cleanup and post-mortem analysis.

We reported on this story shortly after news of the attack became public when early damage estimates hovered at a mere $1 million. Atlanta has learned the hard way that the recovery efforts from a ransomware attack are often much more costly than initial projections might suggest.
Should You Pay the Ransom?

Atlanta didn’t pay the ransom, a strategy generally recommended by security experts and law enforcement officials, as more than 50 percent of victims who pay up don’t recover their data anyway, often because the malware authors botch the decryption coding.

But businesses that refuse to pay the ransom must rely on their backup and business continuity operations to recover their data from earlier archives. Unfortunately the City of Atlanta was ill-equipped to do this.

City officials refused to pay the ransom — $51,000 in Bitcoin — and proceeded to rack up huge recovery costs.
The Most Secure Backup

In hindsight, a better approach would have combined more diligent, regular backups with proactive measures to detect, terminate and instantly recover from a ransomware attack in real time, which is possible with Acronis Backup since it includes Acronis Active Protection, an integrated, AI-based defense against ransomware. The costs of the solution would be small compared to both the ransom demanded and the subsequent cleanup costs.

Acronis Active Protection has already been proven by independent testers to successfully detect, defeat, and automatically recover from ransomware attacks, including like the SamSam variant that brought down the City of Atlanta’s computer systems. Had Atlanta invested in Acronis Backup (our data protection product for businesses) or downloaded Acronis Ransomware Protection (the free streamlined version of Acronis Active Protection), the city would have saved the $10 million in cleanup costs and avoided the huge hit to the reputation of every city official and IT professional involved.
Effective Anti-ransomware Software

The Acronis Active Protection technology included in all of our backup products not only defeats known ransomware strains like SamSam, but so-called “zero-day” ransomware attacks: the kind that are as yet unknown to security researchers. That’s because the built-in machine learning capabilities of Acronis Active Protection identify ransomware attacks not by their known signatures (the approach used by anti-virus programs) but by their behaviors.

Acronis Active Protection combines a knowledge of known ransomware behaviors with the ability to identify new strains in real time based on machine-learning analysis of millions of bad and good programs. This AI-based defense has been proven exceedingly effective in stopping all types of ransomware, successfully defeating 200,000 last year.

And Acronis keeps updating this anti-ransomware tech, preserving its reputation (verified by multiple independent researchers) as the most effective anti-ransomware solution on the market.
Final Thought

The old adage states that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The SamSam attack on the City of Atlanta clearly illustrates that just a little bit of preparation – such as Acronis’ free anti-ransomware software – can help avoid a costly infection. Protecting yourself, your business, and your city against ransomware with Acronis Active Protection will help you escape disaster before it happens.

AJC.COM: Wells Fargo pays $108 million on fraud claim by Atlanta whistleblowers

Wells Fargo pays $108 million on fraud claim by Atlanta whistleblowers

Russell Grantham The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Wells Fargo story:

Wells Fargo agreed to pay $108 million to settle claims that it defrauded veteran customers and taxpayers.

Wells Fargo & Co. has agreed to pay $108 million to the federal government to settle two metro Atlanta whistleblowers’ allegations that the bank charged fraudulent fees on veterans’ home refinancing loans.

The settlement award, disclosed Friday by an Atlanta firm representing the whistleblowers, is the largest so far to result from the 11-year-old lawsuit. Two former metro Atlanta mortgage brokers sued eight banks or mortgage lenders on behalf of the government. The lawsuit was filed in federal district court in Atlanta.

“We’re glad its over, at least as to Wells Fargo,” said one of the two whistleblowers, Victor Bibby. The second is Brian Donnelly.

In 2012, SunTrust Banks, JP Morgan Chase, Countrywide Home Loans and three other major lenders agreed to pay $162 million to settle similar allegations by the whistleblowers.

Another lawsuit is pending against a St. Petersburg, Fla., lender, Mortgage Investors Corp. In 2013, the lender laid off hundreds of employees and stopped making new home loans, blaming tougher regulations under the federal Dodd-Frank Act.

A Wells Fargo spokeswoman said the bank changed its methods for handling Veterans Administration refinancing loans several years ago to fix the alleged problems and settled the lawsuit to “put the matter behind us.”

The San Francisco bank, which is metro Atlanta’s second largest bank in terms of total deposits, has been bruised lately in a number of legal skirmishes over its practices.

Last year, the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and other agencies alleged that the bank’s employees broke the law by opening more than 2 million credit card, checking and savings accounts without customers’ knowledge, in order to meet sales quotas and win bonuses.

Last month, Wells Fargo said it would refund customers after admitting that about 570,000 borrowers may have been wrongly pushed into auto insurance policies that they didn’t need.

In the Atlanta whistleblower case, which affected veteran homeowners across the nation, Bibby and Donnelly alleged that Wells Fargo illegally collected lawyers’ fees and closing costs from borrowers who refinanced their mortgages, even though such charges were barred under the VA’s refinancing program.

The bank hid the fees by mislabeling them, according to Atlanta law firm Butler Wooten & Peak, one of three firms that represented the whistleblowers.

The law firm said taxpayers also lost money due to the alleged fraud. Under the VA loan guarantee program, the agency paid Wells Fargo a portion of any loans on which the borrowers defaulted, even though the fraudulent fees would have negated the government loan guarantees.

Friday, Wells Fargo spokeswoman Crystal Drake said, “Today, we are settling this longstanding lawsuit, which did not seek any refunds for individual veterans, in order to put the matter behind us, and to focus on restoring trust in Wells Fargo.”

She said the bank had previously made compensation available to affected veterans.

“More than six years ago,” she added, “when questions about fees on certain Veterans Administration refinance loans were raised, we resolved those concerns by improving our internal controls to ensure that veteran customers only pay appropriate fees on refinances.”

Under the federal whistleblower’s act, known as the Federal False Claims Act, people with knowledge of wrongdoing by a company can sue on behalf of the government, and collect up to 30 percent of any resulting settlement or jury award.

“Ultimately the government decided not to participate” in the lawsuit, Butler Wooten said in a press release.

Jim Butler, with Butler Wooten, said the whistleblowers’ share of the $270 million in total settlements with the seven lenders is still being negotiated with the federal Justice Department.

Excerpts from column by Cynthia McKinney, former member of Congress who served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Oct. 19, 2015:

• In the aftermath of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power meltdown… the international community has totally failed in keeping the public properly informed and protected from the fallout. Scientists and environmental officials continue to express concern, even now, at the unusual events and wonder about the causes. At the same time, the media present the facts, but fail to make any connection whatsoever to the ongoing state of affairs stemming from the tragic 2011 events at Fukushima. Here are a few recent examples… A September 2015 audio report from Robin Corcoran, biologist from the Kodiak Wildlife National Refuge, confirms local reports that “emaciated” bird carcasses are washing up on Kodiak Island shores… The program concluded by stating that multiple species of birds have declined in number in other Alaska regions… A few days before the Kodiak reports… Josh Saranpaa of the Wildlife Center of the North Coast was quoted as saying, “Every bird we’re seeing is starving to death. It’s pretty bad.” Saranpaa added, “When you see so many starving, something is not quite right out there.”… Julia Reis of the Half Moon Bay Review writes with understatement, “There have been noticeable changes in the Pacific Ocean that have caused difficulties for marine life of late.” Gerry McChesney of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge says that the die-off has him all the more “baffled” because of the strip of cold water in his area full of food for these birds. In my mind’s eye, I can see McChesney scratching his head as I read that he considers poisoning, starvation, and El Nino as possible causes for the die-off. The article ends with the following comment by McChesney, “We might have to see some other problem in the ocean before we understand what’s causing the die-off.”

• ENENews.com points to the problem of the massive die-off happening from San Diego to Alaska—all along the West Coast of the U.S. It highlights in various reports words like “strange,” “unprecedented,” “crazy,” “worst,” with this iconic quote from The Sacramento Bee: “Our gut tells us there is something going on in the marine environment.”

• [T]he media provide coverage of marine anomalies mentioning global warming, even El Nino and toxic algae, while the elephant in the room is Fukushima radiation. It is this silence that is deafening!… I do want to know why in the face of what appear to be Pacific Ocean die-offs, El Nino is mentioned and not the Fukushima-related elevated levels of radiation. As long as there is a palpable lack of transparency in the mainstream media’s ordinary coverage of extraordinary environmental events, that includes what one senses as a reticence to discuss the obvious, I predict that there will be a proliferation of citizen journalists and citizen scientists seizing upon each piece of new data trying to make sense out of a government-approved narrative that just doesn’t make sense… We should not rely on government officials to tell us the truth about the full extent of Fukushima’s fallout.

Flight Path of Ebola Evac Plane – ALLOW IMAGES
Are There Ebola Cases in Mexico?

Nov 17, 2014

On Nov 17, AlertsUSA issued the following
Flash messages to subscriber mobile devices:
11/17 – Susp Ebola in Mexico. Air amb under USGOV contract to evac Ebola patients currently en-route to Guadalajara, then back to Atlanta. MORE: http://bit.ly/su1117a

What You Need To Know
AlertsUSA is calling subscriber attention to an unfolding situation in Mexico.

As most are aware, the U.S. State Department has a sole source contract with Phoenix Air Group of Cartersville, GA to provide specialized air ambulance medical evacuation services for those infected with unique and highly contagious pathogens, including Ebola. At the present time, Phoenix Air Group is the singular organization worldwide operating aircraft with an Aeromedical Biological Containment Shelter (ABCS) which allows medical personnel to enter the containment vessel in-flight to attend to the patient. The latest reports indicate the company has only TWO such aircraft.

Over the last several months, Phoenix Air Group has evacuated a large number of individuals infected with Ebola from West Africa to the United States. These individuals include medical missionaries Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, the first reported cases treated in the U.S., as well as Dr. Martin Salia who arrived at the Nebraska Medical Center over the weekend from Sierra Leone and who died this morning.

EBOLA EVAC PLANE HEADED TO MEXICO

At the time of the preparation of this report, the same plane used to transport Dr. Salia (tail number N163PA) is currently en route from its home base in Cartersville, GA to Housten, TX, then to Guadalajara, Mexico, then back to Fulton County Airport near Atlanta, GA (home of Emory University).

The flight plan and current position of the aircraft can be viewed HERE. You can also jump to this page via http://www.EbolaReady.com .

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT TO YOU?

The implications of a possible Ebola outbreak in Mexico are extraordinary.

As reported within Threat Journal in October, 4-star Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly, commander of U.S. Southern Command, issued dire warnings about Ebola and the impact of an outbreak in the Caribbean or Central America:

“It will make the 68,000 unaccompanied minors look like a small problem.”

“If Ebola breaks out in Haiti or in Central America, I think it is literally ‘Katie bar the door’ in terms of the mass migration … into the United States.”

‘By the end of the year, there’s supposed to be 1.4 million people infected with Ebola and 62 percent of them dying, according to the CDC. That’s horrific. And there is no way we can keep Ebola [contained] in West Africa.”

“The nightmare scenario, I think, is right around the corner.”

While unspoken, General Kelly’s comments call to the forefront the dangerous trifecta combination of poor public health capabilities in Mexico, Central and S. America, the severely weakened U.S. border control situation and the growing number of individuals currently surging North in an attempt to take advantage of President Obama’s promised amnesty actions.

Given the tense political environment surrounding amnesty, it is highly unlikely that mainstream news organizations will touch reporting on this developing situation.

AlertsUSA continues to closely monitor developments in Mexico as well as the ongoing spread of this virus elsewhere and will immediately notify service subscribers of major changes in the overall threat environment as events warrant.
