Millions of semi-conscious consumers, most of whom were probably outraged and appalled by recent privacy scandal outbreaks involving companies like Facebook and Equifax, have been casually shipping away the most precious keys to their genetic code and helping ancestry.com compile the worlds largest DNA database. More than 5 million people have already “spit into tubes” and mailed it into ancestry.com’s database, according a recent report by the Tampa Bay Times.

These 5 million people were the basis of a brand new investigative report published by the Tampa Bay Times, which detailed how ancestry.com, marketing itself as a family friendly and wholesome way to discover ones ethnicity, is actually possibly setting itself up for the largest and most complex security breach of all time.

That’s because ancestry.com is compiling a database, not just of personal information like your Social Security number or date of birth, but also of your DNA. As the report notes, your DNA is arguably the most complex and sensitive form of identification that you can have as a human being.

If Cambridge Analytica would pay top dollar to see what TV shows and books you frequent from your Facebook account, we’re guessing that ancestry.com’s database could be targeted for top dollar and potentially used nefariously, if sold.

But even if the database isn’t sold, that doesn’t mean that your data is 100% going to go uncompromised. As the article notes, ancestry.com has already dealt with its share of security breaches in recent history, including a breach of 55,000 Ancestry customers and reports of the company changing the terms of its agreements with customers on the fly:

Unidentified hackers last year accessed an Ancestry website, RootsWeb, compromising the sign-ins of 55,000 Ancestry customers who had the same log-in credentials with RootsWeb. The site has since been shut down. The incident received little attention, but revealed how customers’ personal information could be accessed and exploited through Ancestry’s partnerships and acquisitions.

AncestryDNA, a subsidiary of Ancestry LLC that markets genetic testing, pledges to safeguard people’s private data. But the company has a history of changing the terms of its agreements with customers. In the most high-profile example, Ancestry in 2014 shut down MyFamily.com, a social networking site where more than 1.5 million users had posted family memories, photos and conversations. Numerous customers said they lost treasured family history because of inadequate notification from the company, which decided not to back up the data.

The company assures that the data is being held securely because when it ships to have your DNA processed by a third-party, they use barcodes instead of names. Then, not unlike the NOC list from the first Mission:Impossible movie, it matches the barcodes back up with the names once the genetic testing results are provided back to the company. From there, it delivers the results to the customer. But those results aren’t just the customers; they also contain data on the customer’s family.

Additionally, customers may not even understand the severity of handing over their DNA to a third party, as opposed to providing an email address or other types of less intense personal information:

Many consumers, he said, have a limited understanding of how DNA is such a unique personal identifier, even more than a fingerprint or social security number. DNA determines the color of a person’s hair and eyes, their skin color and propensity to inherited diseases – information that employers or insurers might want to obtain.

And when someone takes a DNA test, the results not only provide information about that individual, but close relatives as well, said Marcy Darnovsky, director of the Center for Genetics and Society, a biotech watchdog group based in Berkeley, Calif. “You are not just taking the test for you. You are taking it for the whole family,” she said.

For this risk, consumers don’t even seem to be getting a quality product/analysis in return:

Ancestry claims to beat its competitors in accurate analysis of a person’s ethnicity. But interviews with company officials reveal that Ancestry has wide gaps in its ethnic markers for Asia and other sections of the world. Outside geneticists and anthropologists say that Ancestry and other companies are making misleading claims about the accuracy of their ethnic analyses.

And the rights that consumers may ultimately be giving up could be alarming. Ancestry acknowledges the obvious in one of its disclaimers, that “that customers could face various risks if their DNA data and other personal information is made public or somehow obtained by third parties.” The article notes that law enforcement and insurance companies could both theoretically have access to these DNA sample databases:

Law enforcement also has various ways to access people’s DNA data.

To make an arrest in the East Area Rapist case, Sacramento investigators created a bogus account on a open-access DNA database, GEDmatch, and then found a lucky match to DNA taken from a crime scene.

Officials for Ancestry, 23andMe and other leading DNA-testing companies say it would be impossible for law enforcement to use similar surreptitious methods to find suspects on their sites, which only allow customers to send in saliva, not DNA results from an outside testing service. But DNA-testing companies could be forced to hand over genetic data in response to a court warrant or subpoena, as they generally disclose.

“It may be used to identify you, and may negatively impact your ability to obtain certain types of insurance coverage, or used by law enforcement agencies to identify you if they have additional DNA data to compare to your Data,” the company notes its informed consent clause, which testing companies use to shield themselves from future liability.

But you have to hand it to the marketing team at ancestry.com – they’ve done a tremendous job. As the article notes, it has basically convinced consumers to entertain its DNA testing services as a fun and safe way to learn about your ethnic history. Surely, you have met someone or are related to somebody who has used such a service and willingly share the results with you, excited to learn about their potential background.

However the other side to the story needs to be looked at very closely. Not only should it be alarming that ancestry.com is creating a database of people’s most sensitive genetic information, but the company’s history of security breaches should leave investors cautious about who and why they willingly provide their DNA to.

All the while outrage about privacy has been the mainstream media’s focus for the better part of the last couple of months. However, ancestry.com has slipped slipped through the cracks and could arguably be setting itself up to set a new standard – not only for willing invasion of privacy, but the potential for a serious identity breach on a scale of severity we have yet to see.

Texas Democrat Mark Benavides Guilty of Six-Counts of Continuous Trafficking of Persons (The Event Chronicle)

This guy looks guilty as hell!

Texas Democrat Mark Benavides Guilty of Six-Counts of Continuous Trafficking of Persons
By Editor April 4, 2018
By Red Pill

There’s breaking news coming out of San Antonio, Texas tonight where a formerly powerful Democrat, Attorney Mark Benavides, has been found guilty on six individual counts of human trafficking in a grotesque and sex-filled criminal conspiracy.

Mark Benavides, a well-known Democrat who ran for the 186th District Court in 2014, was accused by federal law enforcement of trading his legal services as an attorney for sex from his clients and then recording those manipulative sex-romps, according to local ABC affiliate KSAT 12 in San Antonio.

The clients of Benavides were all criminals such as prostitutes and drug addicts, all of whom were granted his services by trial judges via court-appointed attorney programs. Benevides would then promise the women that if they allowed him to engage in erotic sex that sometimes included physical torture, that he would offer them a legitimate defense in the courtroom.

Throughout the trial, the San Antonio Police Department’s Detective Manual Morales testified that during one of the search warrant executions at Benavides’ homes they discovered an enormous treasure-trove of digital video recordings which depicted Benavides in scenes of sexual gratification for the perverse Attorney who forced his clients into such ordeals.

Morales said police found 246 total “pornographic DVDs” inside of a filing cabinet in the home, and each of those contained videos or Benavides and those female clients.

Some of the content on the explicit videos had such graphic scenes, that one of the female jurors fainted as the group of twelve left the courtroom on Tuesday after being forced to watch them.

The sex-romps with the clients occurred at numerous locations, according to police, with some of the videos being recorded in both jury boxes and courtrooms, as the former clients also testified to, where Benavides had his clients after-hours, and others have occurred inside of various motel rooms across the state.

Benavides Attorneys during the trial had initially requested the trial be moved from San Antonio to Floresville, since the attorney was so widely renown in the area, and the trial had made headlines across the city.

Both the Prosecution and Defense finished their closing arguments on Tuesday before the jury made their decision after four hours of reviewing the case and finding Benavides guilty on all six counts.

Each of the charges against Benavides will carry between 25 and 99 years in a state penitentiary, where it’s expected he will serve out the remainder of his life behind bars.

Sentencing will begin at 8:30 AM on Wednesday in the Wilson County District Court in Floresville, with Benavides attorneys asking for a suspended sentence in lieu of probation.

Benavides makes it only the latest in numerous Democratic politicians to have been either arrested or convicted of crimes this year, and were only halfway through 2018.

California mayor escalates ‘sanctuary city’ war, and Sessions returns fire

California mayor escalates ‘sanctuary city’ war, and Sessions returns fire
By Brian Lonergan, opinion contributor – 03/16/18 10:00 AM EDT
http://thehill.com/opinion/immigration/378711-california-mayor-escalates-sanctuary-city-war-and-sessions-returns-fire

It is becoming increasingly difficult to deny the obvious: when it comes to immigration policy, there is a de facto cold war being fought between the state of California and Washington, D.C.

Libby Schaaf recently fired the first shot.

If California vs. D.C. is a cold war, Mayor Schaaf’s actions threaten to make it a hot one. Until now, California’s defiance of federal law has been mostly passive. The Golden State presently has 35 communities that have proudly enacted sanctuary policies to protect illegal aliens from federal immigration authorities. California’s SB 54 went into effect at the start of the year, officially banning local officials from asking about a person’s immigration status. Schaaf’s disclosure represents a much more proactive form of rebellion.

The feds are not amused. Last week Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a lawsuit against the state, charging that SB 54 and two of its other immigration laws violate the Supremacy Clause. Before an audience of law enforcement officers in Sacramento, Sessions unloaded on Schaaf while adding that he recently signed condolence letters the previous day to the families of two law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

“Here’s my message to Mayor Schaaf: How dare you?” said Sessions. “How dare you needlessly endanger the lives of law enforcement officers to promote a radical, open borders agenda?”

Acting ICE Director Thomas Homan likened Schaaf’s actions to that of a “gang lookout” and said that more than 800 criminal aliens were able to escape the raid as a result of her warning. Homan has long insisted that by prohibiting state and local officials from cooperating, ICE agents are forced to deal with illegal aliens at their residences and other places that increase the danger to both sides. Homan and others have suggested that Schaaf and politicians who act similarly should face obstruction of justice charges.

In damage control mode, Schaaf issued a statement in which she proclaimed, “I know that Oakland is a city of law-abiding immigrants and families who deserve to live free from the constant threat of arrest and deportation.”

That statement explains a lot about the disconnect between open borders politicians and reality. In the upside-down world of California politics, illegal aliens are “law-abiding immigrants,” even though their very existence in the country constitutes a violation of federal law. Along the same line of thinking, those who break our immigration laws deserve to “live free” from any accountability for their actions. This is lunacy and shameless political pandering. Far down the mayor’s list of priorities, apparently, are the real law-abiding citizens of her community who still have more than 800 convicted criminals roaming free among them who should not be there.

While the immigration issue inspires enough passion on its own, California’s extreme position on it is tearing at the very fabric that holds our republic together. The precedent set here is an ominous one. What other federal laws may California decide tomorrow should no longer apply to it? What if numerous other states decide to follow their lead? Instead of immigration laws, what would be the effect if states chose to ignore federal laws on, say, firearm purchases, abortion or same-sex marriage? The result would be nothing short of chaos. The slippery slope here is steep, and California is willfully hurtling down it at breakneck speed.

Schaaf and others like her are doing great damage to the country. They are undermining the rule of law and encouraging illegal activity. Those who act out of such political expediency are putting their constituents, both citizens and illegal aliens, at risk. States should not be in open rebellion to the federal government on matters of national security. Like most wars, this one is not likely to end well for anyone.

Tim Schmidt – USCCA Founder on the Wednesday Florida School Shooting, Makes a Lot of Sense

The FBI is at fault on this one. They say this kid had been calling himself “school shooter” for a year. The FBI had been alerted about this kid a year ago, and numerous times since then.
Those in position know, that autistic people can become violent, and they also know that the medication this kid was on, could cause the very behavior that was displayed on Wednesday.
Thing that mainstream media is not talking about also, is that there was more than one shooter. So where is the other one?
Another excuse to take our firearms from us.

The following was emailed to me from USCCA:

“Why Would Anyone Do Something So Terrible?”
BY TIM SCHMIDT – USCCA FOUNDER
Tim Schmidt
It’s happened again. Tragedy. Heartbreak. Once again, precious human lives have been victimized and cut short by evil circumstances beyond their control.

Preliminary reports indicate that former student Nikolas Cruz, 19, opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, killing 17 people and wounding 14 more.

We don’t (and probably never will) know all the details of what happened inside those walls, but that doesn’t stop us from asking why anyone would do something so terrible.

In fact, in the aftermath of a tragedy such as this, that desire to know why is what sometimes pushes people to thoughtlessly say things that perhaps they wouldn’t normally say.

You see, when we don’t have all the answers, the easiest thing in the world to do is to point fingers:

“This kid obviously had unfettered access to guns and that’s what prompted this whole thing.”

“There is no reason that any person should be able to own a gun like that.”

And perhaps the most common of all:

“We need to just get rid of all guns so this sort of thing can’t happen again.”

But there’s a big problem with those statements: They all shift the blame to something other than the individual responsible for carrying out such atrocities.

People like you and I already know and acknowledge that these tragic events are intentional acts committed by men and women who don’t care at all for precious human life. We hold the perpetrators of these acts accountable, focusing on the things that drove them to such evil instead of the tools they used to carry out their crimes.

Because we have already been enlightened by the truth, I believe that we, responsibly armed Americans, have a duty — especially in the face of events such as these — to respond to inaccurate and cruel statements about guns, concealed carry, the 2nd Amendment or anything else about which we’re knowledgeable and which can direct this important conversation in a truthful way.

We must never allow our emotions to override logic. We must never be cruel. We must respond, as best we can, with the facts.

And we must not — we cannot! — live our lives in fear.

We must transform our fear — our disgust and anger and sadness — into action. Into preparedness.

We must also demand an answer to another really important question:

When will we be allowed to defend our most precious resources?

Students and teachers — in elementary schools all the way up to colleges — have been taught to “lock down.” To hide in closets and behind desks. To wait as seconds turn to minutes (and what must seem like forever) for help to arrive.

Concealed Carry Magazine Executive Editor Kevin Michalowski wrote something about Aaron Feis, the brave football coach at Parkland High School who stepped in front of students when the bullets started flying, that really hit home:

“All he could do was use his body as a shield. Image what he could have done if he was allowed to shoot back at the killer.”

Let’s get rid of gun-free zones. Let’s start arming and training our willing teachers.

It’s time we stopped allowing our legislators to decide how much human lives — especially our children’s — are worth. The answer is simple. They’re worth everything.

Take Care and Stay Safe,

Tim Schmidt

BLM has discretion on removing excess wild horses from public lands – 10th Circuit

David Bailey

(Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday rejected a Wyoming lawsuit that demanded the federal government remove hundreds of wild horses from herd management areas in the state where populations exceeded established limits.

Siding with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and three conservation groups, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the federal agency has discretion to decide whether removal is required where wild horse populations reach above appropriate management levels.

Wyoming argued the BLM had a nondiscretionary duty under the U.S. Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act to remove horses from seven herd management areas, or HMAs, in the state where 2014 populations undisputably exceeded limits.

The state said the setting of an appropriate management limit on horse populations represented a scientific determination of the ecological balance in the management area, requiring the BLM to gather wild horses where those limits were exceeded.

”Contrary to the state’s argument, a determination that an overpopulation exists in a given HMA is not sufficient, standing alone, to trigger any duty on the part of the BLM,” Judge Mary Beck Briscoe wrote for the court.

Bill Eubanks, who represented the American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign, the Cloud Foundation and Return to Freedom groups that intervened in support of the BLM, said the decision has implications throughout the American West.

”The appellate court has clearly affirmed two important issues – first that wild horse populations in excess of the BLM’s arbitrarily established ‘appropriate’ management levels do not equate with overpopulation, and second that the BLM is not required to remove wild horses from the range even if it determines an overpopulation exists,” Eubanks said.

A representative of the Wyoming attorney general’s Office could not be reached immediately for comment.

Wyoming in August 2014 demanded BLM remove horses from seven herd management areas where populations exceeded appropriate management levels. BLM responded in November 2014 that it had not yet determined whether removal was necessary and it would consider Wyoming’s requests along with horse management needs across the western United States still in planning.

In December 2014, Wyoming filed a petition for review with the federal court in Wyoming, arguing BLM failed in a mandatory nondiscretionary duty to manage the horses.

A federal judge in Wyoming dismissed the case in April 2015, finding BLM had wide latitude to decide when it is necessary to remove wild horses from public lands. Wyoming appealed. The case was argued in the Circuit Court three weeks ago.

The panel of Briscoe, Judge Monroe McKay and Judge Scott Matheson said the act does not define “appropriate management level,” equate it with any requirement to remove excess animals from an area or obligate BLM to make an immediate determination on removal.

The statute requires determination both of an excess population and that removal of excess animals is necessary. And although it was undisputed there was an overpopulation of horses, BLM had not decided whether removal was necessary, Briscoe said.

The case is Wyoming v. U.S. Department of the Interior, 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 15-8041.

Washington Post, Feb 10, 2016 (emphasis added): Five years after nuclear meltdown, no one knows what to do with Fukushima… one huge question remains: What is to be done with all the radioactive material?… Tepco has built a 1,500-yard-long “ice wall” around the four reactor buildings… however, Japan’s nuclear watchdog blocked the plan, saying the risk of leakage was still too high… [M]ost problematically, there’s the nuclear fuel from the plant itself… “The biggest challenge is going to be the removal of the nuclear fuel debris,” [Akira Ono, Tepco’s Fukushima Daiichi superintendent] said. “We don’t even know what state the debris is in at the moment.”… one of the options the government is considering is building a nuclear waste dump under the seabed, about eight miles off the Fukushima coast… Many groups… staunchly oppose the idea of burying the radioactive material at sea in such a seismically active area. “At some point it would leak and affect the environment,” said Hideyuki Ban, co-director of the Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center.

Japan Times, Feb 20, 2016: NRA commissioner suggests plan to remove all fuel debris at Fukushima plant may not be best option — A Nuclear Regulation Authority commissioner has suggested that removing all fuel debris from reactors at the meltdown-hit Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant may not be the best option. “I wonder if the situation would be desired that work is still underway to extract fuel debris 70 or 80 years after” the nuclear disaster, NRA Commissioner Toyoshi Fuketa told reporters Friday. “There are a variety of options, including removing as much fuel debris as possible and solidifying the rest,” he added… Fuketa said that unlike the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, it is “not realistic” to construct concrete buildings to cover reactors at the Fukushima No. 1 plant because the situation is different. The commissioner also questioned whether construction of an underground ice wall around the reactor buildings to prevent radioactive water buildup will prove effective.

Excerpts from column by Cynthia McKinney, former member of Congress who served six terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Oct. 19, 2015:

• In the aftermath of Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power meltdown… the international community has totally failed in keeping the public properly informed and protected from the fallout. Scientists and environmental officials continue to express concern, even now, at the unusual events and wonder about the causes. At the same time, the media present the facts, but fail to make any connection whatsoever to the ongoing state of affairs stemming from the tragic 2011 events at Fukushima. Here are a few recent examples… A September 2015 audio report from Robin Corcoran, biologist from the Kodiak Wildlife National Refuge, confirms local reports that “emaciated” bird carcasses are washing up on Kodiak Island shores… The program concluded by stating that multiple species of birds have declined in number in other Alaska regions… A few days before the Kodiak reports… Josh Saranpaa of the Wildlife Center of the North Coast was quoted as saying, “Every bird we’re seeing is starving to death. It’s pretty bad.” Saranpaa added, “When you see so many starving, something is not quite right out there.”… Julia Reis of the Half Moon Bay Review writes with understatement, “There have been noticeable changes in the Pacific Ocean that have caused difficulties for marine life of late.” Gerry McChesney of the Farallon National Wildlife Refuge says that the die-off has him all the more “baffled” because of the strip of cold water in his area full of food for these birds. In my mind’s eye, I can see McChesney scratching his head as I read that he considers poisoning, starvation, and El Nino as possible causes for the die-off. The article ends with the following comment by McChesney, “We might have to see some other problem in the ocean before we understand what’s causing the die-off.”

• ENENews.com points to the problem of the massive die-off happening from San Diego to Alaska—all along the West Coast of the U.S. It highlights in various reports words like “strange,” “unprecedented,” “crazy,” “worst,” with this iconic quote from The Sacramento Bee: “Our gut tells us there is something going on in the marine environment.”

• [T]he media provide coverage of marine anomalies mentioning global warming, even El Nino and toxic algae, while the elephant in the room is Fukushima radiation. It is this silence that is deafening!… I do want to know why in the face of what appear to be Pacific Ocean die-offs, El Nino is mentioned and not the Fukushima-related elevated levels of radiation. As long as there is a palpable lack of transparency in the mainstream media’s ordinary coverage of extraordinary environmental events, that includes what one senses as a reticence to discuss the obvious, I predict that there will be a proliferation of citizen journalists and citizen scientists seizing upon each piece of new data trying to make sense out of a government-approved narrative that just doesn’t make sense… We should not rely on government officials to tell us the truth about the full extent of Fukushima’s fallout.

Al Jazeera, Jan 6, 2016 (emphasis added): In warming ocean, record number of seals and sea lions sicken and starve — Ailing or dead seals and sea lions washed up on California beaches in record numbers in 2015; this year could be worse… They are brought in with all sorts of problems: lockjaw, poisoning, cancer… But most of the record number of seals and sea lions washing up on California’s shores and being brought to a regional rescue center are starving… this slow-motion catastrophe is likely to continue… In 2015, [NOAA] counted more than 4,200 California sea lions, 90 Guadalupe fur seals, and 70 northern fur seals. The [Marine Mammal Center’s] staff began to realize something was different early in the year… the pups brought in for rescue were unlike anything the veterinarians had ever seen… It was the worst year in the center’s 40-year history, staff said… Only half the usual number of sea lion pups were born off the California coast in 2015, [Dr. Shawn Johnson, director of veterinary science at the Marine Mammal Center] said… veterinarians at the Marine Mammal Center are bracing for the worst.

Dr. Shawn Johnson, director of veterinary science at the Marine Mammal Center: “They were basically just skin and bones. Their liver, their pancreas, their intestines were basically shut down. And they were eating themselves from the inside to stay alive by the time we saw them… If it continues, if this is the new normal, the sea lion population and the fur seal population in California are going to have severe drops in their overall population.”

Sea Lion Pups In Trouble Again

Laguna Beach Independent, Dec 18, 2015: With the lowest body weights ever documented, California sea lion pups are not only starving from lack of food, they’re infested with parasites and immune to antibiotics, said [Keith Matassa] the director of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center… A record number of emaciated and dying sea lion and seal pups is expected along local shores this winter… Last year, 3,500 sea lions and seals were rescued by various California marine rehab facilities. This year, the stranded pinnipeds are expected to hit 4,000… The animals are riddled with intestine-perforating parasites, known as thorny-head hookworms. “We’re seeing such a high level of parasites now, it’s not normal,” said Matassa… Antibiotics for infections are proving ineffective… Conditions have “not gotten much better over the past couple of years,” [Sharon Melin, NOAA wildlife biologist] said… The food web, said Melin, “has been out of whack now for quite some time.”… The fact that northern pup seals are following suit signifies the domino effect of a distressed environment, she said… the California sea lion population tops out at 300,000… she predicts a drastic decline to 100,000 due to low food availability… “There’s so many stressors on the ocean right now,” Matassa said.

Guardian, Dec 30, 2015: Unprecedented numbers of dead or starving seals washing ashore as Pacific Ocean warms, with experts saying they are ‘preparing for the worst’ in 2016… According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries, there has been a huge increase in stranded sea lions… According to NOAA, more than 4,200 sick sea lions have been washed up in California so far this year, comfortably the greatest number of strandings over the past decade.

Dr Terry Gosliner, senior curator of invertebrate zoology at the California Academy of Sciences: “We are entering a really interesting period where the observations we make don’t have a precedent… It could take decades for these ecosystems to stabilize again.”

CKNW News Talk 980, Nov 18, 2015 (emphasis added): The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is looking into the death of three fin whales near Bella Bella on BC’s central coast… Paul Cottrel with the DFO says a multiple death like this is extremely unusual. “We just get one or two a year, and usually never in the same area like this, or on the same beach which iseven more rare. So that’s why it’s definitely a very unique situation.” He says all three whales were juvenile males, two of them likely younger than two-years-old… He says there were no bite marks on the carcasses, or any signs of boat strike either. Cottrel says the DFO conducted a necropsy, but found no obvious cause of death.

Global News, Nov 19, 2015: Questions raised after carcasses of 3 dead fin whales found near Bella Bella… “It is very rare and odd that you get three large whales together in one small area,” says Cottrell. “We want to know why it happened, whether it is a natural event, killer whale predation or something else.” Cottrell says, to his knowledge, it has never happened in B.C. before, which is a source for concern. The fin whales are listed as threatened under the Species At Risk Act… and are the second-largest animal on the planet after blue whales. “Any time you get three animals that wash up and die together and it is a threatened species, we are going to work hard to figure out what happened,” he says… “Given the location and where they ended up, all close together, we are thinking that the animals likely live stranded and died there together”…

Vancouver Sun Nov 19, 2015: The recent deaths of three young fin whales near Bella Bella are causing concern after a summer that saw an unusual spike in large whale deaths… “Fin whales are listed as threatened under the Species at Risk Act, so every animal is extremely important to the population. Seeing three together, obviously it’s disturbing and we want to find out what happened,” Cottrell said. He added that it’s very unusual for baleen whales like fins to die in groups… Samples have been taken from the whales’ stomachs and colons… The results of lab tests may take a while, though, because of a backlog caused by a pulse of large whale deaths this summer along the West Coast of North America. “We’re really working everybody pretty hard, and these three fin whales doesn’t lessen the load at all,” Cottrell said. Four humpback whales were found dead in a single week in B.C. waters in August, and as of this week, five fin whale carcasses have been discovered. One sperm whale and one grey whale have also died this year. Meanwhile, more than 30 large whales have died off the coast of Alaska. Scientists have yet to determine why so many whales have died… Scientists are also testing for radionucleotides to see if radioactivity was a factor.

Coastal Guardian Watchmen Network, Oct 27, 2015: Heiltsuk Guardian Watchmen found this large plastic tote and a tire… near Bella Bella yesterday. Tsunami debris is still arriving

From last week: “Unprecedented”: Largest animal on earth found dead on West Coast, “very sick… very emaciated” — TV: Food supply is being “killed off… many sea creatures affected” — Expert: Most whales we’ve been tracking for past two years are not doing well… “I think we’re going to see more of this” (VIDEO)
